Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival - Fiber Playground

(2-Day Class: Friday and Saturday). In this fun-filled two-day workshop, we’ll explore, compare and contrast various types of fiber! Friday morning we’ll explore various types of wool including Long wools, Medium wools, Fine wools, Down wools and Dual Coated wools. Friday afternoon we’ll explore various types of goat fiber including Mohair; Adult; Kid; Cashmere; Cashgora; and Pygora. Saturday morning we’ll explore Silks including Bombyx; Hankies/Caps; Sliver; Lapps; Brick; Cocoons/Reeled; Tussah; Eri; and Mugga. Saturday afternoon we’ll explore the world of man-made fibers: Tencel; Bamboo; Nylon; Mylar; and Angelina. We’ll discuss the characteristics and best uses for each fiber type and how different methods of preparation will affect your final product. Please note: This workshop is not meant to be a breed study. Materials fee of $45 covers fiber and handouts. Instructor will have a few pieces of equipment (i.e., niddy noddies, nostepinnes, a few pairs of handcards) for students to use during the workshop.

Students Should Bring: Note-taking supplies; fiber prep tools (handcards, flicker, or mini combs), a spinning wheel in good working order, extra bobbins and lazy Kate.

Recommended Experience Level: Students should be comfortable with spinning (can spin a stable, continuous yarn) and are looking to expand options.
